Mining Site OSL57 Design Notes
Mining Site OSL57 is a level designed for Unreal Tournament 3 that pays homage to Quake's popular DM-17 level. This level resembles the design and layout of DM-17 but is modified with some unique visuals and design elements.
For Mining Site OSL57 I focused mostly on giving DM-17 a new visual theme and altering its level pathing. My level is an industrial mining platform that sits in a lake at the bottom of a natural crater.
The level was first created with simple BSP brushes and untextured terrain to form the basic design layout. The terrain, bridges and rock cliffs were used to incorporate new path and flow options into the level. (See Flow Notes for more details)

The visual overhaul process started with me using Unreal art assets to replace most of the BSP brushes. Next I proceeded with adding props to the environment and creating the planetary mining theme. The terrain was sculpted into smooth organic curves and painted with sand, grass and rock textures.

Mining Site OSL57 was complimented by a beautiful daytime lighting scheme which added to the level's atmosphere. Particles and cinematic sequences were implemented to make the environment appear alive with moving objects.
