Mining Site OSL57 Lighting Notes
A vibrant daytime lighting scheme was created to promote the lush natural environment of Mining Site OSL57. I first placed a yellow skylight so that the whole level would be evenly lit with one low brightness value. The skylight's purpose was to light the darkest areas of the environment so there would be no pure black shadows.
Next I placed arguably the most important light in my level, a yellow directional light to represent the sun. Around 80% of the lighting and shadows seen in Mining Site OSL57 was determined by this single directional light.
Several light blue point lights were placed just above
the lake to simulate light reflecting off the water's surface and back
onto the environment. On the sub-level platform several red point lights were placed to match the red glowing trim on the floor. These lights created a whole new atmosphere that became unique to the sub-level platform.

The third level platforms of Mining Site OSL57 were designed with a hole at their center. Cyan colored glass panes were placed inside the platform's hole as decorative sunroofs pieces. Under each glass panes I placed a faded cyan point light with a large radius and a high falloff rate. This created a pool of fading cyan light on the floor and also put a tinge of cyan on any surrounding objects.
